Maggie’s Unique Birthday Celebration

(San Andreas, CA.) August 17, 2008, marks Maggie’s first birthday in her new home at the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary, ARK 2000. Maggie is an African elephant who lived at the Alaska Zoo, in Anchorage, for 24 years. She arrived at ARK 2000 in San Andreas, CA, in November of 2007, after an uneventful trip from Alaska aboard a United States Air Force C-17 cargo plane.

“It’s safe to say, Maggie has had a pretty big year, so we thought a special birthday was in order,” said PAWS founder and director, Pat Derby.

At ARK 2000 Maggie will celebrate with her new friends, African elephants Mara, 71, Ruby and Lulu. A special carrot cake will be made in her honor. It will be adorned with some of her favorite treats, including Jolly Rancher candy, a favorite from her days at the Alaska Zoo, and her new California favorite — Jelly Bellies!

PAWS recently received word from Maggie’s friends at the Alaska Zoo, that they, too, plan a “long distance” birthday to honor their special girl.

“Wow! It looks like Maggie may be more popular than Paris Hilton,” exclaimed Pat Derby. “She has true friends all over the world.”

PAWS invites the public to watch Maggie enjoy her birthday cake on PAWS’ webcams at www.pawsweb.org on Sunday, August 17th at noon.

The next chance for people to see Maggie and the other elephants in “person” will be at the “One & Only Elephant Grape Stomp” on Saturday, October 18, 2008, from noon until 3 p.m. This will be Maggie’s first-ever grape stomp-n-chomp. This benefit event will feature wine tasting from the region’s finest, a vegetarian buffet catered by Il Fornaio, and a silent auction. Tickets are $100 each and may be purchased by calling (209) 745-2606. You must be 21 to attend the elephant grape stomp.
