Forged Donation Crushes Hopes for Wild Animal Sanctuary
PAWS Sends Warning to Other Charities

(Galt, CA) - A cruel hoax with criminal intent.

Regardless how the criminal justice system will deal with the perpetrators, the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is left with crushed hopes and a huge problem.

An unexpected donation came in last week. "We were so thankful to receive this generous donation of $95,000 from the O'Reilly International Corporation from New Jersey. Their accompanying letter even stated that they were looking forward to working hand in hand with us in the future. So, of course we were thrilled and rushed to send them a complete historical overview of PAWS along with a heartfelt acknowledgement letter. And since it was a cashier's check, we put the donation to work immediately - purchasing much needed medical equipment and supplies." A stunned Pat Derby, PAWS founder and director, explains.

Then Derby received the terrible call from the bank late yesterday explaining the cashier's check was a forgery... and part of a scam.

The O'Reilly International Company confirmed the devastating news with a document stating "the letter purportedly sent by O'Reilly International with a donation grant, are fictitious documents. Our company has no affiliation with the individuals involved in this scam. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused your organization. Most likely your organization will be receiving a secondary letter from the individuals asking for a refund as your organization was allotted more than was intended. Do not respond to this letter. We have alerted the US Postal Inspectors Office and have filed a complaint with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police."

"I guess working with animals all of my life and also because we have been fortunate to experience some pretty amazing and wonderful public support stories over the years, we didn't for a moment believe it could be a fraud. What a terrible cruel hoax. This is certainly a first for us. I don't even remember the last time a donation check was returned from the bank unpaid." Derby goes on to say.

This cruel act has devastated the Performing Animal Welfare Society, and they want to alert other nonprofits that may become future victims.
