Local Fundraiser Benefits Rescued Elephants

Dana Point, CA (March 17, 2006) - Coastal Creations Catering and the Dana Point Yacht Club recently hosted a fundraiser benefiting the Performing Animal Welfare Society, commonly referred to as PAWS. Founded in 1984 and recognized internationally for its leadership in the protection of captive wildlife, PAWS operates three wildlife refuges, providing peaceful sanctuary for abused and abandoned animals, while promoting national and international programs designed to gain permanent protection for all captive wildlife.

The fundraiser included a silent auction and brunch reception, during which guests were treated to a vegetarian buffet hosted by Coastal Creations. Coastal Creations' Owner and Manager Katia Bagatta chaired the event, providing her services to support this worthy cause. According to Bagatta, "Coastal Creations is honored to have been such an integral component of this collaborative effort. We hope that our collaboration with PAWS to aid the elephants of ARK2000 heightened the public's awareness of the need to assist this charitable organization."

Academy Award-winning actress Kim Basinger donated several pieces of clothing from her personal collection to benefit the nonprofit organization's three wildlife sanctuaries, and her one-of-a-kind memorabilia was featured in the fundraiser's silent auction. For over a dozen years Basinger has selflessly donated her time, energy and celebrity keepsakes to benefit the animals of PAWS.

"Due to Ms. Basinger's long-time commitment to PAWS, we have been able to continue our work at ARK2000's sanctuary," says PAWS' Founder and Director, Pat Derby. "Her gifts and fundraising efforts over the years have given PAWS invaluable resources to finish our barns and habitat areas and help more elephants in need."

PAWS' eight elephants - Wanda, Winky, Annie, Rebecca, Minnie, Lulu, "71," and Mara - are all currently living at ARK2000. The elephant habitat consists of hundreds of acres of rolling hills, natural grasses, trees and lakes. Some of the elephants of PAWS had lived most of their lives in chains and have endured years of abusive training and exploitation before coming to PAWS.

ARK2000 is the largest and most unique captive wildlife sanctuary in the United States. It is located on a 2,300-acre site in California's historic Mother Lode region. PAWS recently launched its first-ever live webcam at ARK2000, welcoming virtual viewers to visit the elephants in their natural habitat at ARK2000 at www.pawsweb.org.

"Many captive elephants today languish in substandard facilities and the expansion of our elephant habitat allows us to help these elephants," Derby explains. "Everyone at PAWS hopes that Ms. Basinger feels very proud about that." In addition to Basinger's items, area merchants contributed a bounty of donations to the silent auction. Day spa gift certificates, Walt Disney memorabilia, sporting event tickets, jewelry, and lavish gift baskets were some of the items available for bidding during the course of the afternoon, helping to make this fundraiser a huge success.
